The Elkton Police Department will begin a program to reduce the number of out of state vehicles in violation of Maryland’s law requiring vehicle owners to register their vehicles in the state of Maryland

The law requiring new residents from out of state to register their vehicles can be found in the Maryland Vehicle Law under Title, TR- Section 13-402, paragraph, 7.  This portion of the law allows a new Maryland resident 60 days in which to file for a new registration with the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration.

A team of officers will be assigned to specific areas in Elkton town limits to conduct the enforcement effort.  Officers will start by issuing a warning to vehicles that are parked and displaying an out of state vehicle registration.  Officers will also provide an informational pamphlet detailing what a citizen needs to do in order to properly register their vehicle.  Upon receipt of a warning the recipient will have 60 days to come into compliance with the law.  After 60 days, officers will begin to issue citations to vehicle owners who have not complied with the registration requirements.  Fines for the violation are $280.00. Out of State license plates may be confiscated and vehicles may be towed.

This will be an ongoing effort by the Elkton Police Department

The Cecil County branch of the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration is located in the Chesapeake Corporate Center just off of Pulaski Highway (RT 40) in Elkton.
