- Can I get a permit or pass for my customers who will be at my business longer than the posted parking limits? EPD
has no special parking passes or provision for extended parking in timed parking areas of the Town. The same situation is true
for Main St. residents. We don't want you or your customers to be burdened or inconvenienced by parking tickets, so we
want to open about the fact that Town of Elkton parking policies are strictly enforced by EPD parking enforcement officers.
-
Can I park in the Fire Lane while loading and unloading merchandise? Your safety is our first concern. Fire lane
parking is reserved for emergency vehicles or official vehicles during the conduct of official activities. Therefore, EPD encourages
the use of loading docks or entrances apart from fire lanes to load and unload merchandise. Owners of vehicles (especially unoccupied
vehicles) parked in marked fire lanes are at risk for receiving parking citations.
- I was taught that 9-1-1 is for
emergencies only, but was told that the only way to get Police response for non-emergency issues is to dial 9-1-1. Am I
doing the right thing if I call 9-1-1 for non-emergency Police response? Yes. In the arrangement we have with Cecil
County, all request for police response (emergency and non-emergency) and handled by the 9-1-1 operator. Please do not hesitate
to call 9-1-1 to report all suspicious, threatening or concerning behavior. Please see the section on "When and how to contact
EPD" for additional information.
- Why didn't an officer contact me when I called about suspicious activity outside of store
where I work? Often times, business owners and employees want EPD to respond, but do not want the officer to physically come
into the store or contact the employee who called. Fear of retaliation is the usual reason. We try very hard to respect
the privacy and anonymity of callers. If you want the responding officer to contact you please be sure to make this request
known when you speak to the dispatcher. We will do our best to honor this request, with the understanding that other calls
for help may be given higher priority than an immediate courtesy follow up. We hope you understand.
- Will EPD meet
with my employees to discuss special safety concerns and considerations? EPD is committed to your safety. If you have
special concerns or needs involving your employees, please contact Chief Ryan or Lt. Donnelly at 410-398-4200.
- Why does
EPD allow apparently unemployed people to "hang out" on Main St all day long? EPD actively enforces all laws and Town of
Elkton ordinances with impartiality. Please appreciate that EPD enforces, but does not create, laws and ordinances. If
at any time, you observe behavior that is suspicious, concerning, threatening, associated with alcohol/drug intoxication, bothersome
to your customers or damaging to your property, please call for Police response.
- Why didn't anyone respond when I called
9-1-1 and requested Police response? It is likely that an officer did respond to your location, but did not or was not able
to provide follow up contact. Anytime you call for help and feel like no one is responding, please call the 9-1-1 operator and
request a status update.
- How do I let EPD know when I am pleased or disappointed in the service provided? EPD is
committed to continuous improvement in our service to you. We are not perfect, but we hope that in the great majority
of cases you get the service you need and want. In situations where you are unhappy with EPD service, please contact Chief
Ryan by email or phone at 410-398-4200. Chief Ryan would also like to know what things you think are working well.
Your feedback is an important component of our planning and quality control activities.
